Abstract

Background: Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a critical condition associated with high morbidity and mortality. The COVID-19 pandemic has dramatically reshaped ARDS research output and priorities.

Objective: To perform a bibliometric analysis of global ARDS research from 2020 to 2025, identifying publication trends, influential contributors, and emerging research themes.
Methods: A bibliometric analysis was conducted using publications indexed in major databases (e.g., Web of Science Core Collection and Scopus). Data were analyzed using bibliometric tools, such as VOSviewer and CiteSpace. Indicators included publication output, citations, authorship, institutional productivity, and keyword co-occurrence.
Results: ARDS-related publications peaked between 2020 and 2021, largely driven by COVID-19-related research. The United States led in productivity and citations, followed by China, Italy, and the United Kingdom. The core journals included Critical Care Medicine and Intensive Care Medicine. The major research clusters included COVID-19-associated ARDS, mechanical ventilation strategies, ECMO, and inflammatory biomarkers. Emerging topics after 2022 included precision medicine, long-term outcomes, and novel therapeutics.
Conclusion: ARDS research experienced rapid expansion during the COVID-19 era, followed by a shift toward mechanistic understanding and personalized treatment approaches. Future studies should focus on phenotyping and targeted therapies.
